Vassar Held Its 154th Commencement May 27

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – 600 students received their diplomas at Vassar College’s 154th Commencement ceremonies Sunday in the college’s outdoor amphitheater.  President Elizabeth Bradley, who was inaugurated last fall, presided.

The commencement speaker was Heather McGhee, leader of Demos, a nationally known public policy organization. McGhee played a key role in shaping economic policy in the wake of the 2007 recession. She co-chaired a task force for Americans for Financial Reform, a group that contributed key provisions of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Consumer Protection Act. She is a frequent guest on such shows as Meet the Press, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Hardball with Chris Matthews and has written for numerous national media outlets, including The New York Times, The Nation and The Hill.

Some Facts about the Class of 2018:

Graduates are from 47 states and 29 Foreign countries or U.S. territories; Six are military veterans;

The most common majors were Political Science, 50; Economics, 45; Biology, 45; Mathematics, 37, and Computer Science, 30. A total of 117 graduates were double majors;

94 were varsity athletes; two were named All-Americans, and 15 were named to league all-star teams;

Four students were awarded Fulbright Fellowships for study or teaching abroad, and two others received post-graduate research fellowships from the National Science Foundation;

Five graduates will be attending medical school next year;

234 of the graduates studied abroad in 39 countries on six continents;

121 engaged in off-campus community service work during the school year;

117 graduates were awarded General Honors

Vassar is a coeducational, independent, residential liberal arts college based in Poughkeepsie, NY and founded in 1861.
