Campus returning to normal, August 29, 2011

Dear members of the Vassar community,

Let me thank you all for your cooperation and good spirits during the storm this weekend. We pulled together as a community in the best possible way and your support really helped those of us who had to make decisions based on less than perfect weather predictions.

I want to thank especially the folks in the Dean of the College area (hats off to Dean Chris Roellke, who led our crisis response team with me), including Residential Life, Campus Dining, the Dean of Studies office, and Safety and Security; the Buildings and Grounds staff who monitored and addressed issues on campus all weekend and continue to do so; the Dean of the Faculty and Dean of Planning and Academic Affairs offices; the Communications Office; and CIS.

We are well on our way to normal schedules and conditions on campus. We ask you to continue to be cautious and patient as clean-up continues. With such substantial rainfall on the campus, B&G has had to respond to leaks in several academic and residential facilities.

Here are updates gathered from pertinent offices on campus:

  1. Please avoid the area by the dam at the end of Sunset Lake; water is flowing rapidly as the lake drains. The Sunset and Kenyon bridges are passable, as is the Town House path.
  2. Academic advising for freshmen is taking place place today as scheduled. Any freshman whose advisor isn't on campus today can receive alternative advising in Rocky 201 or 203 between 4pm and 6pm.
  3. Registration will proceed normally tomorrow starting at 8:15am, and classes will begin as scheduled on Wednesday.
  4. Upperclass students who will miss classes because of an Irene-related delay in returning to campus should contact their class advisor or dean in the Dean of Studies Office.
  5. All programs listed today on the Orientation schedule will proceed as scheduled, WITH THE EXCEPTION of the Transfer/Visiting/Exchange Student Dinner at 7 which has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for later in the term.
  6. The "Sex Signals" program, which was scheduled for Sunday evening, will take place on Tuesday evening (sessions at 5pm and 7pm). This is a mandatory event, and students have been assigned according to their residence house. Students wishing to attend other events scheduled for the evening (Welcome Concert, Campus Life Reception, etc.) should attend the Sex Signals session which does not conflict. All other events will occur as they appear in the Orientation Schedule.

If you have specific questions and are unsure how to proceed, please check in with the Dean of Studies office or the Dean of the College office. We are all here to help make the transition to the beginning of the academic year as smooth as possible.

Enjoy this sunshine,
