Violence in Nigeria

Dear Vassar Community,

I am writing to you today to express my deep sorrow and horror at yesterday’s killing of innocent protesters in Lekki, Nigeria.

We express mourning, support, and solidarity with those who are experiencing suffering due to this tragedy, and to the continued loss of black lives from state-sanctioned violence. The violence against the people of Lekki by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is unacceptable, and we believe  in the right to express outrage about police injustice through peaceful protest.  This should be a human right. Our thoughts are with Nigerians on campus, and also with all black identified peoples in our Vassar community—on campus and alums.

If you are in need of support, our counselors are available by calling 845-437-5700, or feel free to reach out to me or to Dean Alamo. Please also remember to reach out to any of your friends who may be especially affected by this turn of events.

With a heavy heart,
