Vice President of Computing and Information Services

Dear all,

I am delighted to announce the appointment of our new Vice President of Computing and Information Services (CIS), Carlos Garcia, who will begin at Vassar on July 1. After a national search, the search committee was most impressed with Carlos’ experience working with faculty, his global experience, and his technical expertise. I am thankful to the search committee, which included (in alphabetical order): Andrew Ashton, Marianne Begemann, Stephen Dahnert, Wesley Dixon, Nancy Ide, Takunda Maisva, Stephen Rock, Paul Ruud, Mary Carole Starke, Vinay Swamy, Biniam Tesfamariam, and me.

Carlos comes to Vassar with 11 years of successful experience at New York University (NYU) where he served in a variety of roles. Most recently, Carlos served as the Assistant Vice President of Technical Operations at NYU’s Department of Public Safety. In this capacity, Carlos led a unit of more than 400 employees and managed a $47 million budget. In this role, Carlos led the launch of a new multi-technology platform for NYU’s first 24/7 Global Communications Center for Safety and Security. As Assistant Vice President of Technical Operations, Carlos worked extensively with academic and administrative leadership at NYU to shape the department’s technology and security goals and communicate progress related to these goals. Prior to this role, Carlos served as a Senior Director in the department, and expanded technology support operations, transitioning his team from reactive management to a data-driven approach to reduce technology failures and shorten time-to-resolution. Carlos has also served as Director of the IT Program Management Office, Assistant Director of the Global Technology Services Office, and as a Manager in the Office of the Vice Provost for Multicultural Affairs at NYU. Carlos has both a BA in Computer Science and Art History and an MBA from NYU.

Please join me in welcoming Carlos Garcia to the Vassar family. I am certain he will lead our CIS department with integrity, compassion, and an innovative spirit.

Thanks,

Betsy
