Interim Dean of the College

Dear all,

I am writing to let you know that I have offered Professor Carlos Alamo-Pastrana the position of Interim Dean of the College, and he has accepted. He will begin in the role June 1, 2018 so that he and Dean Roellke can overlap for a month of transition. Please join me in welcoming Professor Alamo-Pastrana to this role and thanking him for serving the College and students in this way.

Professor Alamo-Pastrana has been on the Vassar faculty since 2007 and is currently an Associate Professor of Sociology and Latin American and Latino/a Studies. He is the author of Seams of Empire: Race and Radicalism in Puerto Rico and the United States and has a second book in process, Little Things Are Big: Jesus Colon and the Politics of Diaspora. In addition, Professor Alamo-Pastrana is known by his colleagues and students as an exceptionally inspiring teacher, advocate for inclusion, and talented administrator. He became Associate Dean of Strategic Planning and Academic Resources in 2016–2017 and then Associate Dean of Faculty and Academic Resources in 2017–2018. In these roles, he has assisted with critical issues such as managing faculty salary budgets, curricular innovations, the campus master plan, housing policies, and much more. This year, he led the search for the Director of the First-generation, Low Income (FLI) Program (formerly the Transitions Program) and has worked with the Committee on Inclusion and Equity to support institutional efforts to improve the sense of belonging and inclusion on campus.

Given the breadth of his experience on campus, Professor Alamo-Pastrana is an ideal person for this essential role, which oversees the areas of Dean of Students, Dean of Studies, Campus Life and Diversity, Campus Activities, and Safety and Security. WELCOME Interim Dean Alamo-Pastrana!

Thanks,
